Bo Sung Kim
Musician and dancer

Bo-Sung Kim, born in South Korea and raised in Berlin, learned Korean traditional percussion and dance at the age of 12 and was a member of Germany’s first SamulNori ensemble ChonDungSori (founded in 1994).

Her studies in Traditional Folk Theatrics at the Korean National University of Arts in Seoul eventually led her back to Korea, where she received lessons from masters such as Kim Duk Soo, Lee Kwang Soo, Park Byung Chun and Kim Jeong-Hee. Since 2004 she lives again in Berlin, she is a member of the ensemble Doodul Sori and ensembles. She also works with many other artists, without limiting herself to one genre. Motivation

“I have great respect for the diverse musical cultures of this world and see the importance in nurturing and preserving them, especially in this time of globalization and acceleration. At the same time, however, in order to keep such cultures alive, they should be filled with life. Developments must be allowed. I myself have had a musical education in traditional music, but I have a great need to understand traditional art by making it my own and filling it with personality and individuality. In this way, I do not see myself as a cultural mediator but first and foremost as an artist.”
