Northeast Brazilian Music: A Rhythm Course

Module 1 – Xote and Baião Percussion Class

Focused on percussion instruments, this module is going to explore the nuances of the rhythms found in Xote and Baião, two of the main music genres from the northeast region of Brazil. Through listening and practice exercises, participants will be able to recognize differences and similarities between both of these genres and also to play them in groups, even if they don’t have much experience in doing it.

For beginners and advanced players, this module was designed for anyone, musician or not, who shows interest in Brazilian music. Because of that, it will present some of the most known Baião and Xote songs and composers so participants can have a bigger perspective of the importance of these music genres in Brazil.

There are no previous requirements. You can bring your own percussion instrument or use the ones available in Global Music Academy.

Samba Patterns: A Rhythm Course

Module 1 – Samba Basics Percussion Class

This module is going to focus on the basic rhythm patterns found in the main percussion of samba. Starting with Carreteiro, Calango and Teleco Teco rhythms and through listening and practice exercises, participants will be able to understand samba syncopes and to play some of the typical instruments like tamborim, agogô, reco-reco, surdo and pandeiro.

Since samba has many variations, it will be an introduction to it. The idea is to present some of the most known samba songs and composers and to practice the rhythm patterns found in each of them.

For beginners and advanced players, this module was designed for anyone, musician or not, who shows interest in Brazilian music.
