Laura Patchen

1977 kam die gebürtige New Yorkerin erstmals nach Berlin, um ihre Ausbildung an der Tabla zu beginnen. Lauras Suche nach einer nonverbalen Form der Kommunikation und einem Ruhepunkt jenseits von Raum und Zeit führte sie schließlich zu der Musik Indiens, die ihr Herz auf eine ganz besondere Weise berührt. Sie ist eines der Gründungsmitglieder des Ragatala Ensembles, das seit 1980 besteht. Das Ensemble vereint sowohl indische als auch europäische Instrumente.

Doch auch abseits traditioneller indischer Musik sind Laura und ihre Tabla anzutreffen. So bereicherte sie klanglich diverse Produktionen von Jazz über Pop zu Hip Hop, ist auf einer Reihe verschiedener Tonträger zu hören und blickt mittlerweile auf über 25 Jahre Lehrerfahrung zurück.

Motivation

„As someone involved deeply with the classical music of India, it is important to me that its value as a major art form be recognized and propagated as widely as possible. I’m inspired by the fact that learning and playing music helps cognition in general, holistically integrating both intellect and emotion. The singular idea of establishing a center in the middle of Europe where musical diversity would be represented and taught resonated with an ideal strongly held: to find a calling where no harm be done to the planet and in so doing, furthering peace by advancing transcultural appreciation.“
